"The first police action began between July 21, 1947 and August 5, 1947 [1] was code-named" Operation Product ". It’s goal was to get hold of rubber, tobacco, sugar, tea, etc. to help pay for the costs of the war (3 million guilders per day)."
In July 1947, 122(NEI)sqn had 4 operational ic fly-ready P-51’s out of a total of 9 available P-51 fighter aircraft and 10 pilots.
During the 1st 'police action', the squadron was used for the operation "Pelikaan".
This intended the elimination of the enemy AURI. They placed enemy aircraft on Lhonga and Kotaradja airports.
Support was also given to the Dutch ground troops using 250 and 500 pound bombs, 40 and 70 pound rockets and the P-51 on-board armament. Observations were done by Piper Cubs and a Lockheed L-12.
The squadron supported the advance of the troops of the {zbrigade} [Z-Brigade] [2] in their advance to Arnhemia, Loeboek Pakam, Tebingtinggi, Pematang Siantar and Leboek Balai and conducted many (offensive) reconnaissance flights.
During the 1st police action, the 122 squadron flew 203 (338 flight hours) sorties (between 21 July and 30 September). Footnote:[https://www.ipms.nl/artikelen/nedmil-luchtvaart/vliegtuigen-n/ aircraft-n-northam-p51]
After the 1st police action, the activities of the squadron were considerably less. This was mainly due to a shortage of staff and spare equipment. Purification actions would continue until the end of September 1947 and until then air forces had been in action repeatedly.
On January 17, 1948, an agreement was concluded at the 'Renville' in Tanjong Priok, including a cease-fire clause. After this, the number of incidents fell considerably. After March 1948 they increased again. The Netherlands and the Republic were unable to reach agreement on how the agreements from the 'Renville agreement' should be implemented.
